Memory and representativeness.

چکیده

We explore the idea that judgment by representativeness reflects workings of memory. In our model, probability a hypothesis conditional on data increases in ease with which instances are retrieved when cued data. Retrieval is driven measure similarity exhibits contextual interference: data/cue less likely to retrieve occurs frequently other As result, assessments context dependent. new laboratory experiment, participants shown two groups images different distributions colors and features. line model's predictions, we find (a) decreasing frequency given color one group significantly recalled group; (b) cueing features for same set entails probabilistic assessments, even if normatively irrelevant. A calibration model yields good quantitative fit data, highlighting central role interference. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

Semantic memory in Alzheimer's disease: representativeness, ontologic category, and material.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients with semantic memory difficulty and AD patients with relatively preserved semantic memory named pictures and judged the category membership of words and pictures of natural kinds and manufactured artifacts that varied in their representativeness. Only semantically impaired patients were insensitive to representativeness in their category judgments. AD subgroup ...

Commentary: On representativeness.

and more dependent on locally varying modifying influences, the ultimate aim of biological research on humans or other species, is like that of physics, to be able to make general statements about nature. Paradoxical though it may seem, statistical representativeness leads to particular statements about the world, not general statements about nature. As initial steps, surveys may help to seed h...

Bounded Cognition and Representativeness in Forecasting

Most operations models assume that individuals have perfect beliefs about random variables or stochastic processes. In reality, however, individuals make judgment errors and are subject to predictable biases. We leverage two fundamental psychological principles bounded cognition and representativeness to model individuals' forecasting errors and biases in a way that is portable to operations mo...

Representativeness and Uncertainty in Classification Schemes

The choice of implication as a representation for empirical associations and for deduction as a mode of inference requires a mechanism extraneous to deduction to manage uncertainty associated with inference. Consequently, the interpretation of representations of uncertainty is unclear. Representativeness, or degree of fit, is proposed as an interpretation of degree of belief for classification ...

Representativeness in Software Engineering Research

One of the goals of software engineering research is to achieve generality: Are the phenomena found in a few projects reflective of what goes on in others? Will a technique benefit more than just the projects it is evaluated on? The discipline of our community has gained rigor over the past twenty years and is now attempting to achieve generality through evaluation and study of an increasing nu...
